What is Headache?

For those of you who frequently experience headache, you'll know exactly what one is.  If you're unsure or if it's a new sensation, then your headache may be arising from a serious pathology and your Osteopath is an expert in assessing whether you require referral for further assessment without delay.

headaches are very common

The garden variety headache is remarkably common, and generally the most common form of treatment are pain killers. Some people actually develop chronic headaches due to medication overuse.

Unfortunately, medication doesn’t solve your headache, it simply offers a short term solution to dull the pain.

Types of Headache

Tension headaches and migraine are the most common forms of headache. Tension headaches are particularly responsive to manual treatment.

Other common types of headache include sinus headache and exertion headache.

Causes of Headache

Stress (there it is again), muscular tension, sustained poor postures, neck pain, medications, and dietary factors can all contribute to your headache. Changing just one of these factors can reduce your experience of headaches significantly.

Neck pain is a common culprit as the nerves of the upper neck supply areas of the scalp and face. Irritation causes these nerves to become sensitive and the result will be your headache.

Treating Headache

Osteopathy and massage is a safe alternative to medication for headache. By reducing muscle tension, restoring healthy blood supply to nerves and promoting good movement through the joints, Osteopaths and remedial massage therapists are able to significantly reduce the presence of nerve irritation and muscle tension helping to alleviate the cause of your headaches.

Your practitioner at Fairfield Osteopathic Clinic is expertly trained to determine the most appropriate form of treatment that is tailored specifically for you.
